County officials in San Diego, California are feeding birds fish pellets laced with psychotropic medication. The birds who eat these mind-altering morsels can be seen walking instead of flying, and nesting on the ground instead of in trees.
Thanks to the Department of Agriculture pilot program, and a $1.1 million dollar grant, parks and recreation employees will be installing feeding stations around the harbor, bays, and coastlines where birds congregate most frequently. This is expected to save millions of dollars each year in the cleanup of bird excrement on city buildings, equipment, boats, and automobiles. Monitors will patrol each feeding station to watch the birds for any detrimental behavioral changes.
So far, reports document only a few birds walking into a health clinic and one who participated in a half marathon. One county official is worried about humans consuming the pellets as meds, so police and paramedics are standing by.
